Service Description

Mondays at 6PM and Saturdays at 9AM, starting the week of Jan. 8, 2024, for five weeks. These sessions will be hands-on, taught by Sifu Mrazek. The same topics will be covered in each weekly session. You are encouraged to attend both session dates to maximize your learning opportunity. Session dates are below. This is part one of a five-part series and a great introduction to the art of Lion Dance--one of our time-honoured Kung Fu performance traditions! To avoid obvious gaps in your skill and knowledge, we encourage you to learn each course in the order they are offered. Join this program if you're an interested new learner or have experience & want to deepen your understanding and ability in Lion Dancing. The focus will be on hands-on training but will also include instruction on theory, explanation of technique as well as the ethical & cultural connections of this special art that intersects spheres of life and transcends worlds! Successful candidates completing our five-part Lion Dance training series may be eligible to become members of our Lion Team and continue to intermediate and advanced levels in the Lion Dance Training Program. Required: uniform top and student-supplied comfortable (black, recommended) pants and clean, indoor-only runners. Part 1.0 Technique and Theory: week 1, Jan 8 and 13: Basic Kung Fu theory, etiquette, and mindset; introduction to the art of the Lion Dance, how the Lion Dance hinges upon Kung Fu moral code. Bowing, 8-corner Horse movement, advancing step. week 2, Jan 15 and 27: handling equipment, handling the lion, steps building on week 1, basic walking steps (horse, cat and bow). week 3, Jan 22 and 23: continuation of weeks 1 and 2, entering and exiting the lion, qishi high lion. week 4, Jan 29 and 30: gaoshi high lion, qixingshi seven stars stepping. week 5, Feb 5 and 6: the purpose of the Lion Dance, the role of team members, proper mentality to be on the team, expectations of the team, how we measure success. Technique review.
